Electrical Installation of walkway lighting at Inverness TMD

Forte Engineering worked directly with Scotrail to implement the Walkway lighting on ‘Road 8’ of Inverness TMD.

Located to the East of Inverness Station, the location serves as a maintenance yard for the Scotrail fleet within this area. The yard itself consists of 8 roads (tracks) and gives the maintenance team flexibility over where they store trains during periods of maintenance or repair.

As the yard operates on a 24/7 basis, it is imperative that it has adequate lighting to enable staff to walk safely from one end of the yard to the other.

DESCRIPTION OF WORKS

Installation of 38 ‘Thorn Piazza’ luminaires. Installation of 38 IP67 junction boxes. Installation of 300m of cable tray. Installation of 750m of steel wire armoured cable.

Integration with existing yard lighting.
Full testing and commissioning including lux level lighting testing.

The initial proposed design allowed for 19 luminaires to be installed. However, after discussions with the yard staff, the scope was increased to ensure that the foot path on road 8 was completely illuminated.

This project threw up many challenges, not least the weather. Heavy snow impacted progress meaning extra resource had to be allocated to ensure the project was completed on time.

The lighting and cable tray was installed onto an existing mesh fence. However, due to the age and condition of the fence, we allocated extra time and resource to ensure the luminaires were set out effectively, to guarantee the correct spread and uniformity of lighting.

As the luminaires would be exposed to bad weather, we used IP67 rated enclosures and IP rated fibre washers and terminations to ensure an adequate seal to prevent water ingress.

In line with Forte Engineerings policies, all test sheets and conformity documentation were submitted, prior to the system being put into service. Similarly, all supply cables, junction boxes and terminations were de-marked with the circuit supply details to allow for easy future maintenance.

Scotrail Project Manager Mark Rose said,"Scotrail engage with many suppliers within the industry in the delivery of multi-disciplined projects. Forte Engineering are a valued inclusion within our supply chain as their expertise can be called upon to assist in the delivery of complex solutions throughout our estate.

Forte Engineering has recently completed a complex lighting project within our Inverness depot.

Delivery of this project provided specific challenges due to the location within the far north of the country and notably the requirement to deliver the upgrades with minimal disruption to the client’s operational infrastructure.

As Scotrail Project Manger for this scheme, I would wish to thank and congratulate Forte Engineering for their assistance in the seamless delivery of such a complex project. Their team of proactive experts in this field have demonstrated a high level of professionalism, providing technical solutions, precise planning, and a high standard of installation to the satisfaction of all stakeholders.

The improvements to the depot lighting has allowed for a more efficient and safer operational environment."
